[8-7-2022] Microsoft Rewards Bing Homepage Quiz Question: Spring Point Ledge Light is a ‘bug light’, a modest-sized lighthouse. Where is the tallest lighthouse in the US?

The given options are:

  • San Francisco Harbor
  • Cape Hatteras
  • Cape Cod

Correct Answer: Cape Hatteras

Info: Cape Hatteras Light is a lighthouse located on Hatteras Island in the Outer Banks in Buxton, North Carolina, and is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The lighthouse’s semi-unique pattern makes it easy to recognize and famous. It is often ranked high on lists of the most beautiful and famous lighthouses in the U.S. Atlantic currents in this area made for excellent travel for ships, except in the area of Diamond Shoals, just offshore at Cape Hatteras. The large number of ships that ran aground because of these shifting sandbars gave this area the nickname “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” It also led the U.S. Congress to authorize the construction of the Cape Hatteras Light. Its 198-foot height makes it the tallest brick lighthouse structure in the United States and 2nd in the world. The Cape Hatteras Light Station has gone through several incarnations since it was first lit in 1803 to warn ships about Diamond Shoals, a cluster of underwater sandbars that have wrecked many ships and given the area the moniker Graveyard of the Atlantic. The current lighthouse was built 198.49 feet tall so it could alert ships from its low-lying beach site. In a fantastic engineering feat recognized by Guinness World Records, the lighthouse was moved 2,900 feet to save it from coastline erosion in 1999. (Ref)
